While birch bark is not exactly a spice – it certainly does not have wide-ranging culinary uses – it is useful for some things. In particular, it is an ingredient in many home-made root beer recipes.
It also has a long history of medicinal applications. Known as a natural anti-inflammatory, infusions of birch bark are said to help with fevers, stomach-aches, skin outbreaks and joint pain. We can’t speak knowledgeably about those effects, though. All we know is that our wild-harvested birch bark helps make a mean home-brewed root beer.
