For years we bought those little taco kits at the supermarket – the ones that come with a stack of hard taco shells and a little packet of spices. Thankfully we have discovered how much better a freshly-blended mix of spices makes tacos taste, so those spice kits don’t make it into our cart any longer. (We’re making our own tortillas from scratch now, too!)

Our taco seasoning provides a way for you to have a quick, inexpensive home-cooked meal that doesn’t sacrifice good taste for convenience. Just use 4 tablespoons of seasoning for every pound of beef or chicken you use. Brown the meat in a deep frying pan, and then add the seasoning and 1 cup of water. Simmer until the meat is cooked and the sauce is your desired thickness (usually about 10 minutes).

We mix this blend from ground ancho chiles, cumin, garlic, onion, Mexican oregano, paprika, and pepper, plus little sea salt, turbinado sugar and arrowroot powder. It has a well-balanced flavour but is not too hot, so feel free to add some cayenne pepper or red chile flakes if you want more heat.
